Smoky quartz is a rarer, considerably more expensive form of the extremely common clear quartz (or rock crystal). It has a fairly deep brown color that has only recently become more popular among collectors and the public.
The reason for its dark color is unknown, but it is believed to spring from radioactive processes. Smoky quartz is sometimes found with golden rutile inclusions.
